Tips for Parents with blind dogs

Wed 3-20-2012

Started my day off quietly for a change watching Today show and working on my web sites.  It seems at the moment that all the animals are doing great but that can change quickly.  Lately I have lost a cat to a stone lodged in his urethra that the vet was unable to remove on multiple attempts.  Once dislodged days later he died of kidney failure.  My Cinderella "chinese crested"  suddenly became blind a few weeks ago and it was due to fast developing cataracts so she had cataract surgery in Birmingham by Dr. Nelms who by the way is fantastic.  She is doing great and loves having her eyesight back.  Topaz is starting the day out fairly.  He has autoimmune disease "lupus" which has destroyed his joints and he is bedridden.  I do everything for him.  He is on meds to keep it in check.  He has no pain and loves to eat and be held.  My doberman developed an autoimmune disease also she had a crisis one year ago.  She stopped making RBCs and almost died before she was transfused in Auburn.  Auburn vet school hospital saved her life but of course when the vet transferred her we had a 3 hour drive and it was unknown if she would survive the trip due to her low low low blood count.  It was touch and go for days but finally found a medicine combination that worked and now she is healthy and medicated daily.  It is like the Lord sends the special needs cases this way, good thing I am a retired animal loving registered nurse.  I have captured all the wild neighborhood cats and built them shelter and had them sterilized so I have a large number of cats to care for.  Needless to say I am at the vet usually weekly.  I have several chinese cresteds as I used to breed for a short time but had to give that up because it ripped my heart open if I had to send them to their new parents.  I bond way to easily.
Today I do need to go to the vet office and pick up the taxi that my poor kitty was in that did not make it.  Needless to say I spent last Friday crying when the Dr. informed me he had died.  I also need to clean my house and the "cat house"
I still have alot of things to do for my youngest daughters baby shower Sunday afternoon.   This is her first baby, a little girl to be named Alexandra.
Yesterday I had to take my dad to Birmingham for his biannual stress test and he did great.  We had a nice time together as always.  He is the most wonderful dad.  I have been blessed with fantastic parents.
Oh well must move on still lots to do today.  I will check back in at the end of the day for what I hope is a boring update.  God Bless and Have a Great Day!!
